Affiliate Marketing Basics
You might have heard the term Affiliate Marketing from somewhere before and you may be curious to know what it is actually about. Well, in this post we are going to discuss what is Affiliate Marketing, what are the benefits of doing Affiliate Marketing and how you can use it to make a little extra income or even a full time living.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate Marketing involves promoting other people’s products and services and earning commissions from them. It’s basically a very simple process that anyone can do once they understand the basics.
Let me explain further. Affiliate Marketing works on a referral basis, this is whereby you (the affiliate) send people (traffic) to the seller’s product pages, using a unique link (that contains your affiliate ID). If that person then makes a purchase, you will get a percentage of the sale. Sure enough there is a little bit more that goes on in the background like cookies and tracking, but for the most part – that’s how Affiliate Marketing works.

Tip: Most affiliate programs will provide tutorials on how to create and set up your affiliate links. Some merchants even provide training on how to place the links on your website, blog, email and so forth. So always check out the affiliate resources that the merchant provide.
Advantage Of Affiliate Marketing
One of the biggest advantages of doing Affiliate Marketing is that you don’t have to put in the time and effort of creating products to sell. Creating products, either it’s physical or digital, would involve some cost and often takes some time to perform research and development, and perhaps for trial and testing too.
But that’s not the case with Affiliate Marketing. Because the products has already been created, you can start promoting as an affiliate just as soon as your sign up is approved by the seller/merchant. So all you really need to do is just plan your promotion or marketing campaign.
Where Do You Find Affiliate Programs To Join?
There are many ways and places to find affiliate products to promote. The best way is to look at the merchant’s website and see if they have an affiliate program mentioned (try looking at the bottom footer section, it’s usually there). Many merchants have their own affiliate programs and you can apply to join with them directly from their website. If you can’t find the details on the merchant’s website, then you can try to Google it by typing in Google search ‘merchant name affiliate program’, or ‘brand name affiliate program (something like that).
And for some other merchants, they might offer their affiliate programs through bigger networks. In that case, you’ll need to sign up to these networks instead. A good benefit to signing up with bigger networks is that you get to promote all the other products that’s listed on the network’s platform too. Here are some of the most popular networks that you can check out:
Amazon – https://affiliate-program.amazon.com
ShareSale – https://www.shareasale.com
Commission Junction – http://www.cj.com
JVzoo – http://www.jvzoo.com
ClickBank – http://www.clickbank.com
As mentioned earlier, these affiliate networks are very popular and offer many different products from various merchants. So this will allow you to choose what type of products you want to focus on promoting. However, they often have different commission payouts for different products so make sure fully understand the terms of each product you plan to promote, and also how you will be paid.
For instance, on JVzoo you can earn commissions anywhere from 10-100% of the sale, depending on the seller’s product offer. The average is usually 50% per sale. In some cases, the seller (also know as vendor) will pay you instantly and sometimes you have to wait for a specific period before the payment will be released. Vendors will set their own terms and the commission usually varies with each product they are selling (Note: One vendor may be selling multiple products). On Jvzoo, your payments will be directly deposited into your PayPal account.
With networks like ClickBank and Amazon on the other hand, you are paid according to their thresholds and schedules. What this means is that you need to make a certain amount (commission earnings) before your payment could be released. Like I said before, always check the merchant’s or network terms before you start promoting any of their products.
How To Withdraw Your Commissions?
Sellers may provide different options for you to withdraw your earnings. Some of the common methods are payouts through PayPal, bank transfer (wire transfer) and cheques.
However, if you don’t have a PayPal account already, then you should definitely get one. This is because many affiliate programs have the option for payout through PayPal. Sure they might have other payout options like bank transfer or cheque, but with PayPal you definitely get faster access to your profits.
I personally find PayPal to be more cost effective too. You see, I have opted for cheque payment before and it took 2 weeks for the cheque to reach Malaysia from the US. Then when I banked in the cheque to the local bank, there’s also this ‘service charge’ that the bank minus out from cheque amount. So it’s been PayPal for me ever since simply because it’s free, easy, very handy and definitely more cost effective!

Which Affiliate Program Is Better?
Again, make sure you read and understand the commission and payment structure of these affiliate programs. It’s also a good idea to go with a reputable company or brand. But if the product is fairly new to the market and you feel it’s still a good product to promote, then go ahead. If you have any questions about the product, don’t be afraid to reach out the the sellers and get your doubts clarified before you begin promoting for them.
There is no specific rule you should follow – Whether you choose to promote products from an affiliate network or individual sellers (by signing up on their website) is completely up to you. While affiliate networks do offer a certain amount of protection as far as payment is concerned, many private websites offer quite good benefits to the affiliates as well.
As an affiliate marketer myself, I personally feel a mix of the two is a great idea because it brings in different revenue streams for your business.
