Digital Marketing VS Online Marketing
Since digital marketing and online marketing sounds quite similar, the difference may be confusing to some people. But both of them have different meaning and different usage. Therefore, it’s good to know what they are.
So what is digital marketing and what is the difference with online marketing?
Well, for one thing, digital marketing does not necessarily mean that it is only to do with the internet. Yes, you heard that right! Rather it’s actually broader than that, it’s advertising through digital channels to promote a product or service or even building a brand.
Definition of Digital Marketing
According to Wikipedia: Digital marketing is the component of marketing that utilizes internet and online based digital technologies such as desktop computers, mobile phones and other digital media and platforms to promote products and services.
Ok, simply put…
“Digital marketing comprises any marketing methods involving electronic devices to promote a product or service.”
To understand better, let’s take a look at some of the examples of digital marketing.
As I mentioned earlier, digital marketing does not necessarily need to have anything to do with the internet, but it does involve electronic devices.
“There are 2 segments in Digital Marketing – offline marketing and online marketing”
A good example of an offline marketing (under digital marketing) is the ‘Electronic Billboards’. Another example would be the use of iPad in some stores to showcase a product demo. Both of them do not use the internet (they are offline), but uses electronic device instead. Here’s a list of some of the offline marketing types you may notice around you:
- Electronic billboards
- Tablets/iPads/other devices used for product demos, product orders etc
- Text messaging / WhatsApp marketing (used for sending promos, new product launch etc)
- TV commercials
- Radio commercials
Now that we understand what offline digital marketing is, what about online marketing?
Online marketing is a subset of digital marketing. It’s a marketing method using the Internet to promote products and services.
There many types of online marketing that you may have come across yourself. I’ve listed a few below for your reference:
- Affilate marketing
- Email marketing
- Content marketing
- Search engine optimization (SEO)
- Social Media Marketing
All of the online marketing types above will require the Internet to work, unlike the offline marketing mentioned earlier. And they both are a part of digital marketing.
So to summarise again the difference between Digital Marketing and Online Marketing…
“DIGITAL MARKETING comprises any marketing methods involving electronic devices to promote a product or service and ONLINE MARKETING is a subset of digital marketing. “
